New Designers: Vasare Nar, Mash up and L'ILE AUX ASHBY

The amazing geometric prints above are just a few of Vasare Nar's abstract collection. After graduating from the University of Ulster in  2011 with a degree in Design for Visual Communication, she now does illustration and print making on a freelance basis. Drawing inspiration from 80's/90's fashion, aztec designs and vivid colour combinations, her work is an exciting juxtaposition of abstract geometric shapes, bold animal prints and her own photography.

I have come across her work on numerous occasions while carrying out image research but the links to her designs have always been anonymous. I have been reluctant to do a feature on the designs without being able to give the creator the full credit she is due, but have been keen to use them for quite some time as her work could not be more on trend for SS14. The recent Resort 14 catwalks have introduced this emerging trend and high street stores, like Topshop, are already testing the markets' response in their stores.

Through this blog I want to celebrate new artistic/design talent and promote the work of new designer's like Vasare. To see more of her work please visit the links below:

I came across Mash-Up while browsing on ASOS marketplace where their range is sold on the Digital Fashion Week Singapore store (Digital fashion week is the world's first "shoppable live streaming fashion week").

Based in Singapore, Mash-Up is a fashion design label which takes inspiration from ethnic heritage and pop culture while combing the 3 founding designer's(Shaf,Daniela and Nat) love for music, partying and fashion.

The idea behind their brand is that no fashion is original as we have reached a point where we keep repeating previous trends. Their brand suggests that the only way to re-invent fashion is to create a mash up of past fashion and the present, in a similar way to how music mash-ups mix together a variety of music. They interpret this idea by incorporating recycled materials and DIY techniques into their garments.

This concept addresses the dilemma I touched upon in a recent blog post about the return of 90's fashion trends. The fashion market is so saturated that we keep returning to previous fashions, but what comes next? Here is the answer- a mash-up of the past and the present.

The final brand in today's 'featuring' post is L'ILE AUX ASHBY by graphic artist Rayson Tan. After graduating from La Salle College of The Arts in Singapore with a degree in Communication Design, Tan now specialises in fashion accessories.

I have somewhat of an obsession with bold statement necklaces, second only to my new love of flatform shoes and Rayson Tan's new collection includes playful, futuristic and extremely avant garde acrylic necklaces which is why I have been so keen to do a feature on him. Reminiscent of Holly Fulton's' signature style and Finchittida Finch's  laser cut designs- geometric shapes and bold colours are obviously a huge trend in the fashion accessories world. This backs up my belief that many catwalk trends are a reaction to trends in fashion accessories.

As well as his statement jewellery, Rayson Tan has recently launched a collection of dramatic printed clutch bags. All 100% handmade, each bag is completey unique with a different geometric print design. The bold block colours and the overlaying of the geometric shapes reminds me of Wassily Kandinsky(Russian painted 1866-1944) and the Russian Constructivist art movement.

I, for one, am extremely excited to see what other designs Rayson Tan has in store. To see more of his work, visit: http://raysontan.com

In other news, I recently met with my photographer friend Faith Mason, to talk(over wine!) about a collaboration using her amazing landscape photography and turning them into print designs.

The collection will be in keeping with this abstract geometric theme and hopefully will be finished by October and ready to purchase- we are thinking of getting a store on ASOS marketplace, provided everything goes to plan. Quite excited and I'll keep you all updated!
